Item #38623

Published Webley No. 2 Bull Dog Revolver Belonging to Lord Cremorne

  • Maker: Webley
  • Model: Bull Dog
  • Caliber: .450

  • Description: Serial #4198, .450 CF, 2 3/8 barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a handsome, ARMY & NAVY / C.S.L. marked example that retains 95-97% of the original bright nickel finish with some flaking at the toe of the butt, and some scattered spots of plum-brown freckling here and there. The checkered English walnut grips are in fine condition with minor handling marks and blemishes on either side. The lock-up is firm, and the action functions flawlessly. Army & Navy CSL records list this revolver as being sold on September 15, 1882 to Lord Cremorne. This would have been Lt. Colonel Vesey Dawson, 2nd Earl of Dartney in addition to his title of Lord Cremorne. Dawson was born on April 22, 1842, and was educated at Eton. He entered the Coldstream Guards in 1859, and became a Lieutenant and Captain in the regiment in 1865. He became Captain and Lt. Colonel of the regiment in 1871, before retiring in 1876. In addition to his military duties, His Lordship sat as an MP for county Monaghan, as well as High Sheriff, and later as Magistrate. In August of 1882 (a month before he purchased this revolver) he named Justice of the Peace and Deputy-Lieutenant of the county where he owned about 25,000 acres. Cremorne died on June 14, 1920. This very revolver is illustrated on pg. 118 and 119 of Webley Solid Frame Revolvers - Nos. 1, 1 1/2, 2, Bull Dogs & Pugs by Black, Ficken, and Michaels; (2009). This is a great little revolver, in fine-excellent condition, that was owned by a British Lord and military officer, and was published in the definitive work on solid frame Webleys. Antique
